Conservation

2.3.1 Extent to which CCAMLR has taken into account the effects of harvesting, research, conservation and associated activities on the marine ecosystem, the known or potential effects of environmental changes in its management of Antarctic marine living resources, and the risks and effects of the introduction of alien species

Recommendation Responsible body Activities to date Status
2.3.1.1 The RP recommended that clarity was required as to where the issue of non-native species in relation to the Antarctic marine environment should be best dealt with institutionally, and that the forthcoming workshop between the CEP and SC-CAMLR represented an opportunity to determine this. (2016)SC-CAMLR-XXXV, paragraphs 8.3 to 8.7;
(2016)SC-CAMLR-XXXV/07 .

Scientific Committee – Complete – Roles clarified. Referred back to CEP.

CEP convened a 2-day workshop in 2011 on marine and terrestrial specially managed areas.  Cooperation with SC-CAMLR on spatial protection highlighted. SC-CAMLR-XXX/BG/12

2.3.1.2 Furthermore, there was a need to ensure that there was alignment of policies in respect of non-native species between CCAMLR and the CEP/ATCM. Otherwise, there remained the risk that the actions of one body within the ATS could be undermined by the other. SC/
