CCAMLR International Internships

The CCAMLR Secretariat announces two international internships to be hosted by the Secretariat in 2025. The internships are made possible with funding from the China Contribution Fund.

CCAMLR International Internships on technical and scientific subjects are open for application from any person who is a citizen of a CCAMLR Member country (see here). Although they are primarily aimed at actively enrolled graduate or postgraduate students, applications from early career professionals may be accepted. The internship aims to provide applicants with an opportunity to gain experience in the work of a multilateral conservation and management organisation as well as acquiring research skills necessary to undertake a professional role in the discipline of interest. Remuneration is not provided, however, return international travel to Hobart and a significant contribution towards living expenses is available.

Each internship will spend approximately 2 months working at the CCAMLR Secretariat on a special topic. This will be arranged by agreement with the Secretariat. Potential topics for the 2025 internship are:

1) Some Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) and Antarctic Specially Managed Areas (ASMAs) have a marine component which are closed to fishing and therefore are included in CCAMLR Conservation Measures. This list of areas is modified through time by the ATCM and is therefore dynamic. The internship will involve gathering the relevant data on these areas from the ATS website, documenting the prescribed review schedule for the management plans for those areas, compile GIS shapefiles for inclusion in the CCAMLR spatial objects library, create a template for communicating the details of these areas to fishing vessels, and creating webpage content on the CCAMLR website so the information is publicly available.

2)  CCAMLR implements conservation measures to support the conservation and management of Antarctic marine living resources, combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and support a suite of monitoring and compliance systems. CCAMLR seeks to ensure the overall effectiveness of conservation measures and seeks to achieve optimal levels of compliance with them. The internship will conduct a thorough review of CCAMLR Conservation Measures to identify linkages, inconsistencies and methods to rapidly understand the impact of changes in one CM on other linked CMs to assist the Secretariat in supporting the Conservation Measures Drafting Group.

3) The CCAMLR Secretariat will implement a new Communications Strategy in 2025. The internship will focus on the creation of draft web and social media content in accordance with the revised strategy, with possibilities including interactive maps, infographics, carousel social media posts and explainer videos. Experience and qualifications in graphic design, social media, and science communications would be particularly well-regarded.

Applicants should complete the application form, including a summary of their area of interest and the dates they are available for an internship and forward via email to the CCAMLR Secretariat at ccamlr [at] ccamlr [dot] org by 3 January 2025. All applications for an internship will be reviewed by the Executive Secretary based on the qualifications of the intern, the clarity of internship objectives, the relevance of internship to the work priorities and work plan of the CCAMLR Secretariat.
