The 40th meeting of the Scientific Committee on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources was opened today by its Chair, Dr Dirk Welsford (Australia).
The meeting is being held virtually from 11 – 15 October (Coordinated Universal Time). Some 250 scientists from the 26 Members of CCAMLR, other Contracting Parties as well as intergovernmental, environmental and industry organisations will participate in the meetings. The Committee will review the state of Antarctic marine living resources and develop advice for the CAMLR Commission which will meet from 18 to 29 October, including advice on the management of krill and finfish fisheries in the CCAMLR Convention Area.
What is CCAMLR?
- The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources
- Established by an international treaty in 1982
- Its objective is the conservation of Antarctic marine life while providing for rational use
- 26 Members and a further 10 countries have signed the Convention
- The Secretariat (international Headquarters) is at 181 Macquarie Street, Hobart, Australia
