UK scientists from Signy Research Station monitor the breeding population size, breeding success, chick weight at fledging, chick diet and breeding chronology of Adelie and chinstrap penguins. The population size and breeding success of gentoo penguins are also monitored. |
Bird Island - BIG | United Kingdom | Bird Island (Subarea 48.3) is at the northwest tip of South Georgia. The British research station was established in 1957 and has been in year-round operation since 1982. The adult arrival weight, breeding population size, breeding success, chick weight at fledging and chick diet of macaroni penguins are monitored, as are the breeding population size, breeding success and chick weight at fledging of gentoo penguins. Foraging trip duration and pup growth are monitored for Antarctic fur seals, as are the breeding population size and breeding success of black-browed albatross. |
Maiviken - MAI | United Kingdom | Maiviken is located at the north end of Thatcher Peninsula, close to the UK-operated King Edward Point Research Station on South Georgia (Subarea 48.3). The breeding population size, breeding success and chick weight at fledging of gentoo penguins are monitored, as well as seal pup growth of Antarctic fur seals. |
Edmonson Point - EDP | Italy | Edmonson Point (Subarea 88.1) is located in Wood Bay, Ross Sea, with research conducted out of the Italian Terra Nova Bay Station, renamed Mario Zucchelli Station in 2004. The Adelie penguin population is monitored for breeding population size. |
Syowa Station - SYO | Japan | Syowa Station (Division 58.4.2) is a permanent Japanese research station established in 1957, located on the East Ongul Island in Holm Bay, East Antarctica, where the breeding population size of Adelie penguins is monitored. |
Narebski Point - NPT | Korea, Republic of | Narebski Point is a headland on the southeast coast of the Barton Peninsula, at the southwestern end of King George Island in the South Shetland Islands (Subarea 48.1). Research is conducted out of the South Korean King Sejong Station. Breeding population size is monitored for gentoo and chinstrap penguins. |
Cape Hallett - CHA | Korea, Republic of | Cape Hallett (Subarea 88.1) was designated a CEMP site in 2018, with monitoring efforts operating out of the Korean operated Jangbogo Station. Adelie penguins are monitored for breeding population size through an aerial count. |
Bouvet Island - BOI | Norway | Bouvet Island is a sub-Antarctic island and established nature reserve in the South Atlantic Ocean (Subarea 48.6). The Norwegian Polar Institute operates a small research station designed for shorts stays of 2 to 4 months at a time. Foraging behaviour and seal pup growth of Antarctic fur seals are monitored discontinuously, as well as the breeding population size and success of chinstrap and macaroni penguins. Additionally, chinstrap penguins are also sometimes monitored for diet composition. |
Ross Island - ROS | New Zealand | Ross Island (Subarea 88.1) is located in the western Ross Sea. Research is conducted out of the permanent New Zealand station Scott Base, established in 1957. The Adelie penguin population is monitored for breeding population size. |
Lions Rump (King George Island) - LRP | Poland | Lions Rump is a headland on the western side of King George Island in the South Shetland Islands (Subarea 48.1).
