El HMS Protector, el patrullero rompehielos de la Armada Real Británica, circunnavegó la Antártida en la temporada 2015-2016. Durante su paso por la región del mar de Ross, inspectores australianos y neozelandeses de la CCRVMA se sumaron al equipo a bordo del HMS Protector en una misión de patrulla de pesquerías. Entre diciembre de 2015 y febrero de 2016 se realizaron inspecciones a cuatro barcos de pesca de austromerluza con licencia de pesca de la CCRVMA que faenaban en el mar de Ross.
Entre abril y mayo de 2016, el HMS Protector (a bordo del cual viajaban inspectores de la CCRVMA designados únicamente por el Reino Unido) contactó por radio con cuatro pesqueros de kril con licencia de pesca de la CCRVMA que faenaban en la región de la península Antártica.
El presente informe aporta un poco más de información sobre las inspecciones realizadas a lo largo de la temporada actual a bordo del HMS Protector, y propone que la Comisión debata acerca de una serie de temas relativos a políticas que surgieron durante estas actividades de inspección, a fin de analizar si podría fortalecerse el Sistema de Inspección de la CCRVMA en el futuro, y cómo se podría llevar a cabo.

Cooperation between the Scientific Committee of CCAMLR (SC-CAMLR) and the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) has been steadily increasing over the last few years to the mutual benefit of both. In order to avoid duplicate reporting between the two committees, and following discussions between the Chairs of the CEP and SC-CAMLR, the report of the CEP meeting is presented to SC-CAMLR by the CEP Observer to SC-CAMLR and the report of the meeting of SC-CAMLR is presented to the CEP by the SC-CAMLR observer to the CEP. An agreed standard reporting template, to be routinely followed by both committees, has also clarified and simplified the reciprocal reporting. Accordingly, this report provides the CEP’s annual report to SC- CAMLR-XXXV. Furthering the goal of cooperation between the two bodies, the second joint CEP-SC-CAMLR workshop was held May 19-20, 2016 in Punta Arenas, Chile, just prior to the CEP meeting. The terms of reference for the workshop focused primarily on two areas of overlapping interest: climate change and environmental monitoring. Workshop results and recommendations are discussed in a separate report (SC-CAMLR-XXXV/07).
