One of the primary functions of the CCAMLR Secretariat is to manage and process data on behalf of the Commission. These data are stored following different access protocols to balance transparency with confidentiality. Some data are publicly available, while other data are subject to the Rules for Access and Use of CCAMLR with some data being subject to additional provisions.
The following table provides a functional overview of our data holdings and their respective access levels. A detailed overview per accessibility category is provided below the table.

1. Public Data
The following datasets are publicly available:
- Statistical Bulletin: Aggregated annual catch and effort data and summarized Dissostichus catch and export (CDS) document statistics.
- Fishery Reports: Detailed annual reports for each fishery that incorporate catch and effort data, IUU activity, incidental mortality (IMAF), statistics on tag-recaptures and scientific observations by observers, including VME taxa sightings and spatial distribution maps.
- Vessel Lists: Current and historical registries of authorized and IUU-listed vessels.
- Fishery Notifications: List with all vessels and Members which notified CCAMLR on their intention to participate in CCAMLR fisheries on each season.
- Note: Notifications for the upcoming season are restricted to Members until the season begins, at which point they become public.
- Fishing Gear Library: A comprehensive overview of authorized fishing gear and vessel equipment.
- VME Registry: Data on Registered Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems and Risk Areas.
- CCAMLR MPA Information Repository (CMIR): A repository for Marine Protected Area project data.
- CCAMLR Public Data Repository: Other publicly available data, mainly data used for spatial management.
- Forms and Manuals: All current and historical CCAMLR data forms and collection manuals.
- CCAMLR Science Toolbox: Describes data resources developed for or by CCAMLR Scientists.
2. Data Available to Members on the CCAMLR website
The following data are made available to Members through the secure section of the CCAMLR website to facilitate CCAMLR operations. These data are subject to Rules for Access and Use of CCAMLR Data, and their use in publications outside CCAMLR requires formal approval.
- Fishery Notifications: Access to detailed documentation and notifications for Research Fisheries.
- Vessel Transhipments: Access to a list of transhipment events notified to the Secretariat under the requirements of Conservation Measure (CM) 10-09.
- Vessel Movements: Access to vessel movements notified to the Secretariat under the requirements of CM 10-04.
- Inspection reports: Access to a list of reports of Port Inspections and At-Sea Inspections associated with a Member's own Party.
- Fishery Notices: Access to in-season reported catch and effort data, including fishery closure forecasts and closure notices, for all krill fisheries and exploratory finfish fisheries.
- Catch Documentation Scheme (CDS): Access to Dissostichus Catch Documents and Dissostichus Export Documents associated with a Member's own Party, in accordance with the Rules for Access to Catch Documentation Scheme Data.
- Data Viewers: Access to visualisations of aggregated CCAMLR science data holdings through dedicated acoustic and science data viewers.
3. Data Available by Request
The following data are only available to CCAMLR Members by request, following the Rules for Access and Use of CCAMLR data:
Science and research data
Permission to be obtained from the Scientific Committee Representatives:
- Fishery Catch and Effort Data: Detailed data reported by fishing vessels, including aggregated reports for closure forecasts and fine-scale haul-by-haul reports. The data are reported using the fishery data reporting forms.
- SISO Observer data and reports: scientific information essential for assessing the impact of fishing on the ecosystem, including the status of target populations, as well as those of related and dependent species. The data reported using the Observer data reporting forms include:
- Biological measurements of target taxa.
- Tag release and recapture data of toothfish and skates.
- Catch composition and biological measurements of by-catch taxa.
- IMAF: Data on incidental mortality of birds and marine mammals associated with fisheries.
- VME Taxa: Detection of benthic Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem taxa.
- Research Surveys: Catch and effort data, and length frequency data reported using the C4 Trawl Survey reporting form.
- Acoustic data: raw acoustic data files and calculated Nautical Area Scattering Coefficient (NASC) data used to estimate krill biomass. A summary of the data submitted is available to Members through the acoustic data viewer.
- CEMP data: CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program designed to monitor key life-history parameters (breeding success, population size, phenology) of selected krill-dependent species like seals, penguins, and albatross. These data are reported using the CEMP data collection forms.
- Marine Debris: Data from beach surveys, debris in seabird colonies, entanglements of marine mammals, and hydrocarbon soiling of birds and mammals, reported using the Marine debris data collection forms.
Fishery Monitoring and Compliance data
Permission to be obtained from the Commissioners:
- CDS Data: Requests for other party data and data beyond what is available on the secure section of the website.
- VMS data: Vessel positional data, which are also subject to provisions on secure and confidential treatment specified in Annex B of Conservation Measure 10-04.
- Vessel Transhipments: Requests for data beyond what is available on the secure section of the website.
- Inspection reports: Requests for other party data and data beyond what is available on the secure section of the website.
The protocol to request these data is outlined here.
