  5. Rockhopper penguins and other marine life threatened by driftnet fisheries in the south Atlantic ocean

Abstract:  The oriental driftnet fleet, which is responsible for the large scale mortality of non-target species in the Pacific Ocean, has extended its range to include the South Atlantic Ocean. Relatively little is known about the areas of operation and impacts of driftnetting in the South

  6. Albatross mortality and associated bait loss in the Japanese longline fishery in the Southern Ocean

Abstract:  A conservative calculation of the number of albatrosses killed annually on Japanese longlines in southern oceans is 44, 000. The actual figure could be double and is sufficiently high to substantiate claims that serious declines in albatross populations are due to this fishing activity.

Abstract:  Recently a longline fishery has developed for the Patagonian Toothfish, Dissostichus eleginoides, in the vicinity of Shag Rocks, South Georgia. Assessment of this stock is not possible by conventional methods because the bulk of the adult population may be dispersed over a wide area in

  10. On assessing the size of the humped rockcod stock (Notothenia gibberifrons) in Subarea 48.3

Abstract:  An adaptive approach was used to assess the Notothenia gibberifrons stock in Area 48.3. It is demonstrated that when tuning the VPA using abundance indices from trawl surveys it is imperative to estimate the catchability coefficient. This parameter was equal to 0.326 to 0.635. An
