Abstract:

A circumpolar gap analysis technical workshop on developing systematic conservation planning for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in domains 3 (Weddell Sea), 4 (Bouvet-Maud) and 9 (Amundsen-Bellingshausen) was held in Brussels, Belgium between 11 and 14 September 2012.

The main workshop outcomes were the aggregation of available data and the development of conservation objectives for the individual domains, which can be included in future systematic conservation planning processes.

A total of 23 scientists participated in the workshop (locally and by teleconference).

Abstract:

Through an in-depth discussion at the WG-EMM regarding green-weight estimation in the krill fishery, the Working Group recognised importance of obtaining detailed information on the methods by which green weight is estimated. The Report of WG-EMM included an appendix that describes this issue in detail and identifies a process by which the required information and data could be acquired.  An updated appendix, by including further information from Members, is attached to this paper progress the issue of green-weight estimation.

One of the 19 regions identified by the Antarctic Ocean Alliance (AOA) in October 2011 for the designation of marine protection is the coastal region of East Antarctica. The following Background Paper summarises the Report, Antarctic Ocean Legacy: Protection for the East Antarctic Coastal Region, which outlines the AOA’s vision for marine protection in the East Antarctic. Appendix 1 contains the full Report.
