Description and responsibilities

Role Description and responsibilities
Chair

Commission and Scientific Committee meetings are run by a Chair. The Chair keeps meetings to time and determines the order in which participants provide input to the meeting. The Chair receives email notification of report text marked as 'pending approval' during meetings and approves it or requests revisions.

A particular Member holds the office of Chair of the Commission for two years and that Member appoints an individual to the role. Following that term, the Member that is alphabetically (English) next in the list takes on the role of Chair.

The Standing Committee on Implementation and Compliance (SCIC) and the Standing Committee on Administration and Finance (SCAF) are also run by Chairs.

Vice-Chair (Commission) A Vice-Chair is appointed to support the Chair of Commission meetings in his/her duties. If the chair is unavailable to conduct a meeting, the Vice-Chair takes on that role.
Junior Vice-Chair (Commission) A Junior Vice-Chair is appointed for Commission meetings. The role is largely a preparatory stage for future Vice-Chairs and Chairs but in the case of both the Chair and Vice-Chair being unavailable for duty, the Junior Vice-Chair would step up into the more senior role.
Support (Commission) The support person advises the Chair on matters of organisation, information flow and protocol. Support for Commission meetings is provided by the Executive Secretary of CCAMLR.
Support (Scientific Committee) The support person advises the Chair on matters of organisation, information flow and protocol. Support for Scientific Committee meetings is provided by the Science and Data Managers of the CCAMLR Secretariat.
Senior Vice-Chair (Scientific Committee) A Senior Vice-Chair is appointed to support the Chair of Scientific Committee meetings in his/her duties. If the Chair is unavailable to conduct a meeting, the Senior Vice-Chair takes on that role.
Junior Vice-Chair (Scientific Committee) A Junior Vice-Chair is appointed for Scientific Committee meetings. The role is largely a preparatory stage for future Senior Vice-Chairs and Chairs but in the case of both the Chair and Senior Vice-Chair being unavailable for duty, the Junior Vice-Chair would step up into the more senior role.
Convener Working group meetings and symposia are run by a Convener. The Convener keeps meetings to time and determines the order in which participants provide input to the meeting. The Convener receives email notification of report text marked as 'pending approval' during meetings and approves it or requests revisions.
Rapporteur Each meeting will have a number of rapporteurs assigned to create written records of the proceedings. These individuals may be from Member parties (in the case of working groups) or from the Secretariat (for Commission and Scientific Committee meetings). Interns at the Secretariat may also take on the role of rapporteur.
