Changes at the CCAMLR Secretariat

After 8 years as the Executive Secretary of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources Dr Denzil Miller retired at the end of April. He will remain in Hobart pursuing personal research interests and building an international marine consultancy firm he has helped established from offices in Brisbane. Dr Miller has been replaced by Andrew Wright as the CCAMLR Secretariat’s fourth Executive Secretary.

Mr Wright has worked overseas for the last 30 years. His experience is mainly associated with oceanic tuna and tropical coral reef associated fisheries. He spent most of his working life in the tropical Pacific where he worked for several multilateral fisheries organizations.

His most recent appointment prior to joining CCAMLR was as Executive Director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission where he was the inaugural Executive Director based in Federated States of Micronesia. The Convention Area for the WCPFC covers approximately 20% of the Earth’s surface and supports tuna fisheries that contribute 55% of the global tuna catch or approximately 2.2 million tones annually. The WCPFC has 35 member countries and supports similar institutional processes as CCAMLR with an annual scientific committee meeting that feeds into an annual session of Commission members consisting of policy makers and managers.
