Prince Charles discusses sustainable fisheries management with CCAMLR

His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, and Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cornwall, visited Tasmania for five hours yesterday as part of a week-long Australian visit. Their visit to Hobart included a tour of a local superfine wool merino sheep stud, a stroll through Salamanca and almost an hour with representatives of the Hobart Antarctic community. During his conversation with Andrew Wright, CCAMLR’s Executive Secretary, Dr David Agnew (Marine Stewardship Council) and Dr Andrew Constable (Australian Antarctic Division) HRH showed a strong and informed interest in the Southern Ocean reflecting on his on-going active engagement in global initiatives to reduce seabird mortality in world fisheries. He was familiar with toothfish and krill (the CCAMLR display included live krill provided by Dr So Kawaguchi and colleagues from AAD), was concerned about the impacts of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems and inquired into the status of discussions relating to marine protected areas around Antarctica.
