Other fisheries

Other fisheries have operated in the Southern Ocean at various times since the 1960s. Some of these fisheries were large and intense, and occurred prior to the establishment of CCAMLR. These fisheries have ceased operating, either because they are now lapsed fisheries, or they have been closed by the Commission following early, heavy exploitation.

In addition, the Commission has closed a number of fisheries for toothfish due to concerns about the adverse impacts of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The following are examples of lapsed fisheries:

  • fishery for lanternfish (Electrona carlsbergi) in Subarea 48.3
  • fishery for crab (Lithodidae) in Subarea 48.3
  • mixed fishery for spiny icefish (Chaenodraco wilsoni), striped-eye rockcod (Lepidonotothen kempi), Antarctic rockcod (Trematomus eulepidotus) and Antarctic silverfish (Pleuragramma antarcticum) in Division 58.4.2
  • fishery for squid (Martialia hyadesi) in Subarea 48.3.

The following fisheries are closed:
